 A Family Farm Tradition Gettings Garden is a third and fourth generation of pick-your own strawberry and raspberry “know-how”. Don and Sheril Getting in the 1950’s were alfalfa, corn, oats, and soybean farmers, who raised hogs and fed lambs and cattle. Of their three son’s, Don, Dean, and David, Don, and his family, Mary Jo, Andy, & Brittany, are the only active members of Gettings Garden.
Gettings Garden became a reality in 1983 with its first acre of planted straw-berries. Oris Hinegardner, Sheril’s uncle and second generation fruit grower, was Don’s mentor. The next Spring two more acres were planted and a stand and pre-picked strawberries were added to the operation. Later raspberries were added.
Now we are also making with our own berries jams, pies, and vinegar. The extremes in temperature in North-west Iowa produce very sweet berries or what we call “that wonderful Iowa flavor”. These weather conditions keep Don busy during the growing season keeping the plants warm and then later cool. Straw-berries and raspberries prefer moderate temperatures in the 50’s and 70’s with low winds speeds
Now Gettings Garden is a great family outing with the best fresh picked straw-berries and raspberries for miles around. We’re growing berries just for you to improve your health and ours.
